Why a Fragrance Changes Over Time

Spray a perfume and it smells one way. Thirty minutes later it smells different. By evening, it has transformed again. That's not your nose playing tricks — it's the fragrance pyramid, and understanding it will completely change how you shop for scent.

The Three Layers of Every Perfume

Layer When you smell it Typical notes
Top notes First 5–30 minutes Citrus, light fruits, fresh herbs
Heart notes 30 minutes to a few hours Florals, spices, fruits
Base notes 3+ hours, into the next day Woods, amber, musk, vanilla, oud

Top Notes: The First Impression

Top notes are the quickest to evaporate — bright, fresh molecules like bergamot, lemon, lavender and green leaves. They decide whether a scent feels immediately appealing, but they fade within half an hour. If you love a perfume only in the first few minutes, you're loving the top notes, not the whole story.

Heart Notes: The Soul of the Scent

Once the top notes lift, the heart takes over. This is the personality of the fragrance: rose, jasmine, peony, cinnamon, or peach. It lasts for hours and is what most people mean when they describe "what the perfume smells like."

Base Notes: The Memory

Base notes are the heavy, slow-evaporating molecules — sandalwood, cedar, patchouli, amber, vanilla, musk and oud. They anchor the fragrance, extend its life to 6–8+ hours, and are what lingers on your scarf or coat long after you've gone. Eau de parfums are rich in these base notes, which is why they last so much longer.

How to Test a Fragrance Properly

  1. Never judge a scent in the first 5 minutes — that's only the top notes
  2. Spray on skin (not paper) and wait at least 30 minutes
  3. Check how it smells at 4 hours — that's the heart-plus-base blend you'll actually wear
  4. Re-test across different days; skin chemistry changes with weather and hydration

Remember: a great fragrance is a story told in three acts — judge it by the ending, not the opening.
